What is a rotary cam switch?

A rotary cam switch uses a shaped cam to operate stacked contacts as the handle moves through defined positions. Depending on its contact program, it can provide ON/OFF, changeover, reversing, selector, instrument and motor-control functions.

“Cam switch” describes the switching mechanism; the actual function depends on the contact program and published ratings. Select the device by operational current, utilization category, voltage, positions, poles, switching angle, mounting and enclosure requirements.

Handle position selectedThe operator turns the handle to a defined maintained or spring-return position.
Cam sequence operates contactsThe internal cam opens and closes the programmed contact sections.
Circuit function changesThe connected circuit performs the specified selection, changeover or isolation function.

How to choose a rotary cam switch

Define the required circuit function first, then verify electrical duty and mechanical configuration on the exact series.

Circuit function and contact program

Specify ON/OFF, source changeover, reversing, selector, instrument or motor-control duty and provide the required contact sequence.

Operational current and utilization category

Match the load type, system voltage and published AC or DC operational rating; do not select by thermal current alone.

Positions, poles and switching angle

Confirm handle positions, number of switched circuits, contact sections and the required 30°, 45°, 60° or 90° indexing.

Mounting, handle and enclosure

Define panel or single-hole mounting, handle style, legend plate, padlocking and the required enclosure protection.

Match the switch family to the duty

LW26 provides broad programmable control and changeover coverage, while LW30 is focused on load disconnection and selected small-motor duties.

Rotary Cam Switch Selection Questions

Quick answers for preliminary product-family comparison before detailed circuit verification.

What does a rotary cam switch do?

It uses a rotary cam mechanism to operate a programmed set of contacts. The same product family can perform ON/OFF, changeover, selector, reversing, instrument or motor-control functions when configured and rated for that duty.

Is a cam switch the same as a changeover switch?

Not exactly. A cam switch describes a rotary contact mechanism, while a changeover switch describes a circuit function. A rotary cam switch can be configured as a changeover switch, but many cam-switch configurations perform other functions.

How should I choose between LW26 and LW30?

Choose LW26 when you need broad programmable control, selector or changeover arrangements across its published 10A–315A range. Consider LW30 for load disconnection and selected AC-23A or AC-3 duties within its published 20A–100A range.

Can a rotary cam switch control a motor?

Some configurations have published motor-control utilization ratings. Confirm motor voltage, operational current, starting duty, switching category, contact program and the required protective-device coordination.

What information is needed for a custom contact program?

Provide the circuit function or wiring diagram, voltage, load type and current, positions, poles, contact sequence, switching angle, maintained or spring-return operation, mounting, handle, marking, enclosure and quantity.
