What is a surge protective device?

An SPD limits transient overvoltage by diverting surge current away from protected equipment. It is coordinated with the system voltage, earthing arrangement, installation point and upstream protection.

An SPD is not a substitute for overload, short-circuit or sustained overvoltage protection. Device type, maximum continuous operating voltage, discharge-current ratings, pole arrangement and AC or DC suitability must be verified.

Tensione nominale del sistemaThe SPD remains connected while the circuit operates within its normal voltage range.
Transient surgeLightning or switching activity creates a short-duration overvoltage event.
Surge limitedThe SPD diverts surge current and limits the voltage according to its characteristics.

How to choose an SPD

Coordinate the SPD with the electrical system, installation location and backup protection.

AC, DC or solar PV system

Use a device explicitly rated for the circuit type, voltage and earthing arrangement.

SPD type and installation point

Coordinate Type 1, Type 2 or Type 3 protection where required by the system design.

Uc, In, Imax or Iimp ratings

Verify the continuous voltage and surge-current characteristics in the model datasheet.

Pole arrangement and backup protection

Match the wiring configuration and coordinate the specified upstream protective device.

Coordinated surge protection

The required SPD type depends on the installation architecture. Not every VIOX series is available in every class or voltage.

SPD Selection Questions

Quick answers for preliminary product-family comparison before detailed circuit verification.

What does an SPD protect against?

An SPD is designed to limit transient overvoltage caused by events such as lightning effects or switching. It does not replace overcurrent or sustained overvoltage protection.

What is the difference between Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 SPDs?

The types relate to different test duties and installation positions within a coordinated surge-protection system. The required combination depends on the electrical architecture and applicable standards.

Can an AC SPD be used on a solar DC circuit?

No, unless the product documentation explicitly approves that DC voltage and configuration. Solar PV circuits require SPDs selected for their DC operating conditions and polarity arrangement.

Which SPD ratings should be checked?

Check system type, maximum continuous operating voltage, nominal and maximum discharge current or impulse current where applicable, voltage protection level, poles and backup protection.

Dove deve essere installato un SPD?

Installation position depends on the system design and protection coordination. Keep connections appropriately arranged and follow the product instructions and applicable installation rules.
