Cos'è un relè termico di sovraccarico?

A thermal overload relay monitors motor current and operates its control contacts when a sustained overload condition exceeds its time-current characteristics. It is commonly coordinated with a contactor in a motor starter.

An overload relay does not normally provide short-circuit interruption. Its adjustment range, trip behavior, phase sensitivity, reset mode, auxiliary contacts, contactor compatibility and upstream short-circuit protection must be selected together.

Motor operatingCurrent remains within the selected relay setting and operating conditions.
Sovraccarico prolungatoThe sensing elements respond according to the relay time-current characteristics.
Contactor releasedThe relay control contact opens the starter circuit to stop the motor.

How to choose an overload relay

Begin with the motor nameplate current and starter combination, then verify trip and reset requirements.

Intervallo di regolazione

Select a range that includes the motor rated current and follow the setting instructions.

Caratteristiche del viaggio

Match starting time, duty and applicable motor-protection requirements.

Compatibilità con il contattore

Confirm mechanical mounting, current path and accessory compatibility.

Reset and auxiliary functions

Define manual or automatic reset, test, stop and signaling needs.

Coordinate three protection roles

A complete starter coordinates switching, overload response and short-circuit protection.

Overload Relay Selection Questions

Quick answers for preliminary product-family comparison before detailed circuit verification.

What does a thermal overload relay protect against?

It responds to sustained motor overload according to its characteristics and operates the starter control circuit. Exact protection functions vary by model.

Does an overload relay provide short-circuit protection?

Normally no. A coordinated fuse, circuit breaker or motor protective device is required for short-circuit protection.

How is the adjustment range selected?

Choose a relay range that includes the motor nameplate current, then set and commission it according to the motor, starter and product instructions.

What is trip class?

Trip class describes the relay operating-time characteristic under specified overload conditions. The required class depends on the motor starting and protection needs.

Must the relay match the contactor?

Yes. Verify electrical rating, direct-mount or separate-mount compatibility, terminal arrangement and accessory coordination.
