What is an automatic transfer switch?

An automatic transfer switch monitors the selected supply conditions and transfers a load between a normal source and an alternate source according to its control logic. It is used where continuity of supply requires an arranged changeover path.

An ATS must be selected as part of the complete distribution system. Rated current, pole arrangement, utilization requirements, transfer sequence, control supply, source conditions and coordination with protective devices all need verification.

Normal source availableThe load remains connected to the preferred source within the controller conditions.
Source condition changesThe controller evaluates voltage, timing and transfer settings available on the selected model.
Alternate source selectedThe switching mechanism transfers the load according to the approved sequence.

How to choose an ATS

Define both sources, the load and the required transfer sequence before comparing switch series.

Rated current and utilization

Match the connected load, switching duty and upstream protective-device coordination.

Pole and neutral arrangement

Confirm the number of switched poles and the project neutral strategy.

Transfer and control logic

Check operating mode, source monitoring, delays and controller functions by model.

Mechanical integration

Verify mounting, wiring access, operating mechanism and enclosure space.

Define the transfer sequence

Transfer behavior varies by controller and switch series. Confirm the exact sequence before specifying the product.

ATS Selection Questions

Réponses rapides pour une comparaison préliminaire des gammes de produits avant la vérification détaillée des circuits.

What does an automatic transfer switch do?

An ATS transfers a load between two arranged supply sources according to the monitoring and control functions of the selected model.

Which information is needed to select an ATS?

Confirm both source voltages and frequencies, load current, poles, neutral arrangement, switching duty, transfer sequence, control requirements and installation method.

Is an ATS an overcurrent protective device?

An ATS performs switching and transfer. Overload and short-circuit protection must be coordinated with the protective devices specified for the system.

Can every ATS switch a generator supply?

Generator applications require compatible source monitoring, timing, control interfaces and switching ratings. Confirm these functions on the exact series.

What is the difference between automatic and manual transfer?

Automatic transfer uses monitoring and controller logic to initiate the sequence. Manual operation requires an operator action; available modes vary by model.
