A thermal overload relay monitors motor current and operates its control contacts when a sustained overload condition exceeds its time-current characteristics. It is commonly coordinated with a contactor in a motor starter.
An overload relay does not normally provide short-circuit interruption. Its adjustment range, trip behavior, phase sensitivity, reset mode, auxiliary contacts, contactor compatibility and upstream short-circuit protection must be selected together.

What does a thermal overload relay protect against?
It responds to sustained motor overload according to its characteristics and operates the starter control circuit. Exact protection functions vary by model.
Does an overload relay provide short-circuit protection?
