3. Verify Break-Before-Make Behavior
Forward and reverse paths must not close together. A center OFF position and break-before-make sequence help prevent conflicting connections. Unless the machine and switch are designed for plugging or rapid reversal, allow the motor to stop before selecting the opposite direction.
4. Check Maintained and Momentary Positions
A maintained switch stays in position; a momentary switch returns to Off. Some machines require maintained Forward and momentary Reverse. Changing this behavior alters machine operation even if the contact pattern is correct.
5. Confirm Mounting and Environmental Protection
Traditional drum switches are often enclosed, while a panel-mounted cam switch places its contacts behind the panel. Compare panel cutout, shaft length, rear depth, conductor space, terminal capacity, grounding, and the required IP or NEMA enclosure protection.

A direct reversing switch may leave the motor ready to restart when power returns and may lack overload, remote-trip, and emergency-stop functions. Choose a reversing contactor arrangement instead of direct manual switching when the application needs:
- an emergency-stop circuit that removes coil power;
