Choose a cable gland from the measured outside diameter of the finished cable, not from conductor area, AWG, core count, or the thread name alone. Match that OD to an exact gland model’s clamping range, then verify the entry thread, panel interface, gland construction, and application requirements.

Cable OD → exact model clamping range → thread system and size → panel entry → application verification
An M20 gland does not have one universal cable range. In the VIOX standard nylon series, for example, M20×1.5 models are available with 5–10 mm, 6–12 mm, and 10–14 mm clamping ranges. The correct range therefore belongs to the model, not to “M20” in isolation.
What Each Cable Gland Dimension Means
Cable-gland tables contain several dimensions that answer different questions. They should not be substituted for one another.
| Term | ၎င်းသည် ဘာကိုဖော်ပြသနည်း | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Cable outside diameter (OD) | The measured diameter over the finished outer sheath | Use it to find a model whose documented clamping range contains the measured OD |
| Clamping or sealing range | The minimum-to-maximum cable OD accepted by one exact gland model | Treat it as model-specific; do not transfer it to every gland with the same thread |
| ချည်ကြိုး သတ်မှတ်ချက် | The entry-thread system and nominal size, such as M20×1.5, PG13.5, NPT 1/2, or G 1/2 | Match it to the enclosure entry or the specified locknut arrangement |
| Thread major OD | The measured outside diameter across the male thread crests | Use it with pitch and thread form when identifying an unknown thread; it is not automatically the drilled-hole size |
| Panel entry or mounting hole | The clearance or tapped opening that receives the gland | Verify whether the installation uses a clearance hole and locknut, a tapped entry, a seal, or a manufacturer-defined tolerance |
| Thread length | The usable male thread length on the gland | Check it against wall thickness, locknut engagement, gasket, and enclosure construction |
Measure a round cable across the outer sheath with calipers at several points. Do not measure a compressed, damaged, or stripped section. For a non-round cable, a standard round sealing insert may not be appropriate; use product data intended for flat or shaped cable.
If the entry thread is unknown, the dedicated guide to identifying cable gland threads explains how to compare diameter, pitch, taper, and thread form.
Quick Cable OD to Cable Gland Lookup
This reverse lookup provides representative VIOX candidates for common finished-cable diameters. It is not a cross-material equivalence table. Start with cable OD, then open the applicable series table to verify the complete row.
| Measured cable OD | Representative VIOX candidate | ချည် | Documented clamping range | စီးရီး |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 mm | PG21A-NP | PG21 | 13–18 mm | Nickel-plated brass PG |
| 18 mm | NPT3/4-SS | NPT 3/4 | 13–18 mm | Stainless steel NPT |
| 20 mm | 1001-M3225 | M32×1.5 | 18–25 mm | စံနိုင်လွန် |
| 24 mm | G1-SS | G ၁ | 18–25 mm | Stainless steel G/BSPP |
| 50 mm | G2-1/2-SS | G 2-1/2 | 42–52 mm | Stainless steel G/BSPP |
An OD that falls exactly on a range endpoint still requires exact-product review. Cable tolerance, sheath material, temperature, movement, and the sealing design can affect the finished assembly. A value near the middle of a range can be a useful shortlisting preference when two otherwise suitable models overlap, but it does not replace the manufacturer’s permitted range or application checks.
Metric Cable Gland Size Chart
Metric cable-gland threads are written as nominal major diameter and pitch. For example, M20×1.5 indicates a 20 mm nominal metric thread with a 1.5 mm pitch. The cable range remains model-specific.
The following data comes from the VIOX

| M63×1.5 | 1001-M6345 | 35–45 mm | 18 mm | 56 mm | 75/65 mm |
The M20 rows illustrate the main rule: thread size controls the enclosure interface, while insert and gland design control the cable range. A generic chart that lists only “M20 = 6–12 mm” omits valid M20 options in this series.
PG Cable Gland Size Chart
PG is a different thread system from Metric. Similar cable ranges do not make a PG thread fit a Metric entry.
The table below uses the VIOX ပီဂျီကြိုးကြေးဝါဂလင်း series because it supplies model-level cable ranges, male thread OD, and recommended clearance-hole data in one source.
| PG thread | VIOX model | ကေဘယ်ကြိုး အတိုင်းအတာ | Male thread OD | Recommended clearance hole | Thread length |

| PG63 | PG63-NP | 42–52 mm | 72 မီလီမီတာ | 72–72.2 mm | 15 mm |
The listed clearance holes apply to this VIOX brass PG series. Do not reuse them as universal holes for every PG gland. A tapped entry uses the specified thread form; a through-hole installation must also account for the exact gland shoulder, locknut, gasket, panel thickness, and manufacturing tolerance.
NPT Cable Gland Size Chart
NPT is a tapered pipe thread covered by ASME B1.20.1. Its inch-based nominal name is not the measured male thread OD. Do not replace it with an equally named G/BSPP thread: NPT and G use different thread geometry and pitch conventions.
The following model data comes from the VIOX Stainless Steel Cable Gland G and NPT Series.
| NPT thread | VIOX model | ကေဘယ်ကြိုး အတိုင်းအတာ | Male thread OD | Pitch | Thread length |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NPT 1/4 | NPT1/4-SS | 3–6.5 mm | 13.6 mm | 18 TPI | 7 mm |
| NPT 3/8 | NPT3/8-SS | 4–8 mm | 17 mm | 18 TPI | ၈ မီလီမီတာ |
| NPT ၁/၂ | NPT1/2-SS | 6–12 mm | 21.2 mm | 14 TPI | ၈ မီလီမီတာ |
| NPT 3/4 | NPT3/4-SS | 13–18 mm | 26.5 mm | 14 TPI | 9 mm |
| NPT ၁ | NPT1-SS | 18–25 mm | 33.2 mm | 11.5 TPI | 11 mm |
| NPT 1-1/4 | NPT1-1/4-SS | 25–33 mm | 41.9 mm | 11.5 TPI | 13 mm |
| NPT 1-1/2 | NPT1-1/2-SS | 32–38 mm | 48 mm | 11.5 TPI | 14 mm |
| NPT ၂ | NPT2-SS | 37–44 mm | 60 မီလီမီတာ | 11.5 TPI | 14 mm |
| NPT 2-1/2 | NPT2-1/2-SS | 42–52 mm | 72.6 mm | 8 TPI | 15 mm |
| NPT 3 | NPT3-SS | 65–70 mm | 88.6 mm | 8 TPI | 15 mm |
Because NPT is tapered, evaluate thread engagement and sealing according to the enclosure, gland, and installation documentation. A cable-range match alone does not prove that the entry connection is suitable.
G/BSPP Cable Gland Size Chart
G threads are parallel pipe threads specified in ISO 228-1 and are commonly described as BSPP. ISO 228-1 covers threads for connections where pressure-tight joints are not made on the threads themselves, so the complete gland interface may rely on a gasket, O-ring, shoulder, or another documented sealing arrangement.
This table uses the stainless-steel G series from the same VIOX product source.
| G/BSPP thread | VIOX model | ကေဘယ်ကြိုး အတိုင်းအတာ | Male thread OD | Pitch | Thread length |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| G ၁/၄ | G1/4-SS | 3–6.5 mm | 13.1 mm | 19 TPI | 7 mm |
| G ၃/၈ | G3/8-SS | 4–8 mm | 16.6 mm | 19 TPI | ၈ မီလီမီတာ |
| G ၁/၂ | G1/2-SS | 6–12 mm | 20.9 mm | 14 TPI | ၈ မီလီမီတာ |
| G ၃/၄ | G3/4-SS | 13–18 mm | 26.4 mm | 14 TPI | 9 mm |
| G ၁ | G1-SS | 18–25 mm | 33.2 mm | 11 TPI | 11 mm |
| G 1-1/4 | G1-1/4-SS | 25–33 mm | 41.9 mm | 11 TPI | 13 mm |
| G 1-1/2 | G1-1/2-SS | 32–38 mm | 47.8 mm | 11 TPI | 14 mm |
| G ၂ | G2-SS | 37–44 mm | 59.6 mm | 11 TPI | 14 mm |
| G 2-1/2 | G2-1/2-SS | 42–52 mm | 75.1 mm | 11 TPI | 15 mm |
| G 3 | G3-SS | 65–70 mm | 87.8 mm | 11 TPI | 15 mm |
Notice that NPT 1 and G 1 in this product family both show a 33.2 mm male OD, yet their pitches and thread forms differ. Diameter alone is therefore not enough to establish interchangeability.
Metric vs PG vs NPT vs G/BSPP
These thread families can be compared by the cable ranges available in particular product series, but they cannot be converted by cable range.
| Thread family | Typical designation | Thread characteristic | ရွေးချယ်မှု စည်းမျဉ်း |
|---|---|---|---|
| မက်ထရစ် | M20×1.5 | Parallel metric thread defined by nominal diameter and pitch | Match the exact metric entry and model range |
| PG | PG13.5 | PG thread with its own diameter and pitch series | Use only with the correct PG entry or a documented adapter |
| NPT | NPT ၁/၂ | Tapered inch pipe thread | Verify taper, pitch, engagement, and the documented sealing method |
| G/BSPP | G ၁/၂ | Parallel inch pipe thread under ISO 228-1 | Verify the parallel entry and external sealing arrangement |
For example, VIOX M20 model 1001-M2012, PG13.5A-NP, NPT1/2-SS, and G1/2-SS each include a 6–12 mm cable range. That makes them clamping-range alternatives for different entries, not mechanically equivalent glands. Their thread geometry and enclosure interfaces differ.
If the enclosure has one thread and the selected gland has another, use an application-appropriate reducer, enlarger, or adapter with documented thread forms and environmental performance. Do not force one thread into another or infer compatibility from a close measured diameter.
M12, M16, M20, M25, M32, M40, M50, and M63 Quick Lookup
The quickest accurate answer to “What cable size fits an M20 gland?” is a list of exact model options, not one universal number.
| Metric size | VIOX standard nylon cable-range options in this table | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| M12×1.5 | 3–6.5 mm; 4–8 mm | Select 1001-M1265 or 1001-M1208 from actual cable OD |
| M16×1.5 | 3–7 mm; 4–8 mm; 5–10 mm | Three inserts or model configurations serve different cable ODs |
| M20×1.5 | 5–10 mm; 6–12 mm; 10–14 mm | “M20 = 6–12 mm” is incomplete for this VIOX series |
| M25×1.5 | 7–13 mm; 10–14 mm; 13–18 mm | Choose by model range and then verify body dimensions |
| M32×1.5 | 13–18 mm; 18–25 mm | The two rows share the entry thread but not the sealing range |
| M40×1.5 | 18–25 mm; 22–31 mm | Cable ODs from 22–25 mm overlap; check the complete application |
| M50×1.5 | 22–28 mm; 31–41 mm | There is a gap between these listed standard-nylon options |
| M63×1.5 | 29–38 mm; 35–45 mm | The 35–38 mm overlap provides two candidates, not an automatic choice |
Where the listed ranges overlap, compare the actual cable tolerance and exact gland geometry. Where there is a gap, do not choose a range that excludes the cable; check another VIOX series, insert configuration, or thread size.
How to Choose Between Two Candidate Sizes
Use this order when more than one model includes the measured cable OD:
- Confirm actual OD and tolerance. Use the cable manufacturer’s maximum finished diameter when available, and verify representative cable rather than relying on conductor area.
- Keep the full tolerance inside one documented range. A nominal 10 mm cable may not remain exactly 10 mm across manufacturing batches.
- Match the enclosure entry. An attractive cable range is irrelevant if the thread form, pitch, or entry size is wrong.
- Check panel geometry. Confirm thread length, wall thickness, shoulder clearance, locknut, gasket, and any anti-rotation requirement.
- Check construction and material. Nylon, nickel-plated brass, and stainless-steel glands may have different ranges and application limits even when their thread names match.
- Verify environmental and mechanical requirements. Review temperature, chemicals, UV exposure, pull or strain requirements, cable movement, ingress target, and required approvals in the exact datasheet.
For a 12.5 mm cable, the standard nylon table lists M25 model 1001-M2513 at 7–13 mm and 1001-M2514 at 10–14 mm. Both contain the nominal OD. The answer depends on cable tolerance, entry requirements, dimensions, and the current model documentation—not on a rule that always chooses the smaller or larger thread.
When This General Size Chart Does Not Apply
The tables above are most useful for round, unarmoured cable in the named VIOX series. Use a construction-specific data set when the gland must perform another function:
- SWA or other armoured cable: selection may require bedding diameter, oversheath diameter, armour type, and armour dimensions. Core count and conductor mm² are not enough. Use the 4-core cable gland size guide for that narrower task and the armoured cable gland guide for construction boundaries.
- EMC cable gland: confirm shield termination method, cable shield construction, contact range, and the applicable EMC assembly. See how to choose an EMC cable gland.
- Multi-hole insert: each hole has its own cable range, and the combined insert has cable-spacing and sealing constraints. Do not divide a single-hole range by the number of cables.
- Flat or non-round cable: use a sealing insert and gland designed for that cable profile.
- Hazardous area: use the exact certified gland type, cable construction, sealing arrangement, equipment protection concept, and installation rules required by the project. A dimensional fit does not establish Ex suitability.
- Reducer, enlarger, or adapter: verify both thread interfaces, material, engagement, sealing method, and the environmental or certification effect on the completed assembly.
For a broader explanation of gland constructions and functions, use the complete cable gland guide. To compare available product families, go to the VIOX cable gland range.
