How the FCP18 Three-Phase Voltage Relay Works

The FCP18 operates by continuously monitoring the three-phase power supply and responding to abnormal conditions according to pre-configured parameters. When the relay detects an issue such as incorrect phase sequence, phase loss, voltage outside acceptable thresholds, or unacceptable asymmetry between phases, it triggers a response based on its programming.

The visual monitoring system employs multiple LED indicators:

Power LED: Indicates that the device is receiving power
Phase LED: Shows the status of phase monitoring
Relay LED: Indicates the relay’s operational status

The time delay feature is particularly valuable as it prevents unnecessary activation during momentary power fluctuations, reducing wear on connected equipment and minimizing production interruptions.

Protection Functions Explained

Phase Loss & Phase Sequence Protection

VIOX FCP18 Three-Phase Voltage Relay Phase Loss & Phase Sequence Protection

Phase loss occurs when one or more phases in a three-phase system fail, potentially causing severe damage to motors and other equipment. The FCP18 quickly detects phase loss conditions and activates protection mechanisms to prevent equipment damage.

Phase sequence monitoring ensures that the three phases (L1, L2, L3) maintain the correct rotational order, which is critical for the proper operation of three-phase motors and other direction-sensitive equipment. Incorrect phase sequence can cause motors to run backward, potentially damaging both the motor and connected machinery.

Overvoltage & Undervoltage Protection

VIOX FCP18 Three-Phase Voltage Relay Overvoltage & Undervoltage Protection

The FCP18 constantly monitors voltage levels across all three phases. When voltage exceeds or falls below preset thresholds, the relay responds according to its configuration. The time delay increases proportionally as the voltage stabilizes, preventing unnecessary triggering during brief fluctuations.

Overvoltage protection prevents damage from power surges, while undervoltage protection guards against issues like motor overheating that can occur when operating at reduced voltage levels.

Asymmetry Protection

VIOX FCP18 Three-Phase Voltage Relay Asymmetry Protection

Voltage asymmetry (or imbalance) occurs when there’s an unequal distribution of voltage across the three phases. The FCP18 calculates asymmetry using the formula:

Asy = (Umax-Umin)/Uavr

Where:
Umax = max(U1,U2,U3)
Umin = min(U1,U2,U3)
Uavr = (U1+U2+U3)/3

Asymmetry can lead to inefficient operation, overheating, and premature failure of three-phase equipment, making this protection function essential for maintaining system health and longevity.

FCP18 Models and Configuration Options

The FCP18 is available in multiple configurations to accommodate various monitoring requirements and power systems. The model numbering system (FCP18-01-A) provides specific information about the device’s functionality and supply voltage range.
