RCD vs MCB: Key Differences, Protection and When to Use Both

একটি MCB protects cables and equipment against overload and short circuits. A residual-current-only RCD, commonly an RCCB, detects current leaking from the intended circuit path and disconnects the supply to reduce electric-shock risk.

They are not substitutes. Where both protection functions are required, the circuit normally uses an RCCB/RCD with an MCB, or one RCBO that combines residual-current and overcurrent protection.

Terminology note: RCD is a broad family term. In this article, “RCD” means a residual-current device without integral overcurrent protection—typically an RCCB—unless RCBO is stated separately.

The practical difference is the fault each device measures. An MCB responds when current magnitude becomes excessive. An RCD/RCCB compares the current leaving through the live conductor with the current returning through the neutral conductor. A difference indicates that current is flowing through another path, potentially to earth.

Which Fault Trips Which Device?

The table below is a decision framework, not a substitute for a protection study. Actual operation depends on fault magnitude, duration, device characteristics, system earthing and coordination.

MCBs respond to overcurrent, while RCDs/RCCBs respond to residual-current imbalance.

This explains why an RCD can trip while the MCB remains on: there may be enough current imbalance to operate the residual-current device without enough total current to operate the MCB.

Why Neither Device Can Replace the Other

Why an RCD cannot replace an MCB

A balanced overload can overheat a cable while the current leaving and returning through the monitored conductors remains nearly equal. A residual-current-only device does not provide the overload or short-circuit protection required for that circuit. The overcurrent function must come from an appropriately selected MCB, fuse or another protective device.

Why an MCB cannot replace an RCD

An MCB is designed to respond to overcurrent. Leakage through damaged insulation, equipment or a person may be significant for shock protection while remaining below the MCB’s operating current. An MCB therefore does not provide dedicated residual-current detection.

Do You Need Both? RCD + MCB vs RCBO

The useful question is usually not “MCB or RCD?” but “how should the installation provide both required functions?”

Three Practical Examples

1. An overloaded final circuit

If connected loads draw more current than the circuit can carry for the relevant time, the MCB’s overcurrent function should disconnect the circuit. A residual-current-only RCD may not see this condition because the outgoing and returning currents can remain balanced.

2. Equipment develops leakage to earth

If insulation deteriorates and current flows to earth, the RCD/RCCB detects the difference between outgoing and returning current. The MCB may remain closed if the fault current does not reach its operating characteristic.

3. One circuit needs both functions

The designer can coordinate a separate RCCB/RCD and MCB, or specify an RCBO that integrates both functions. The final choice must match the circuit, earthing arrangement, load behavior and applicable installation requirements.

RCD and MCB Selection Checklist

Before selecting or combining devices, confirm:

  • the circuit voltage, load current and conductor protection requirement;
  • the prospective fault current and required breaking capacity;
  • the MCB trip characteristic needed for the load’s starting or inrush behavior;
  • whether residual-current protection is required and which RCD type suits the load waveform;
  • the number of poles and neutral switching arrangement;
  • coordination with upstream and downstream protective devices;
  • whether grouped RCCB protection or individual RCBO protection better fits continuity needs; and
  • the local installation rules, product documentation and manufacturer instructions.

For household and similar applications, IEC 60898-1 covers circuit breakers for overcurrent protection, IEC 61008-1 covers RCCBs without integral overcurrent protection, and IEC 61009-1 covers RCBOs with integral overcurrent protection. Is an RCD better than an MCB?

No. They measure different fault conditions. An MCB provides overcurrent protection; an RCD/RCCB provides residual-current protection. The required functions depend on the circuit and applicable rules.

Can an RCD replace an MCB?

Not when the RCD is an RCCB without integral overcurrent protection. Overload and short-circuit protection must still be provided by an MCB, fuse or another suitable device.

Does an RCD trip during an overload?

A residual-current-only RCD normally does not respond to a balanced overload. It may trip if the event also creates leakage to earth, but that does not make it an overcurrent protective device.

Why does the RCD trip but the MCB stay on?

This usually indicates a residual-current imbalance without enough overcurrent to operate the MCB. Possible causes include insulation leakage, equipment faults and wiring problems. The circuit should be investigated by a qualified person.

What combines an RCD and an MCB?

An RCBO—Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent Protection—combines residual-current, overload and short-circuit protection in one device.

What is the difference between an RCD and an RCCB?

RCD is the broad category for residual-current protective devices. RCCB identifies a residual-current circuit breaker without integral overcurrent protection. An RCBO is also an RCD, but it includes overcurrent protection.
